Critical Visualisation is a collective of practice-based design researchers with a shared interest in cultural storytelling about environmental issues, and ethical approaches to engaging with traditional and emerging technologies. We are based at the UTS School of Design.

Projects investigate diverse topics including communicating the impacts of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, cultural and narrative approaches to wayfinding, design for Indigenous land management practices, creating oral histories of design practice, and the impact of AI on filmic identities. In addition to traditional scholarly publications, our researchers report new knowledge generated through practice-based research through exhibitions, events, visual essays and other non-traditional publications.

Critical Visualisation is aligned with the UTS Visualisation Institute and is committed to collaborative and cross disciplinary practice. Our research partners include: the Australian Museum, Firesticks Alliance Indigenous Incorporation, the City of Sydney, Think + Do Tank Foundation, National Museum Australia, Powerhouse Museum, National Library of Australia, Australia Council for the Arts.
